FRIDAY, MARCH 7

Romeo & Juliet (ballet)

The Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College (7300 College Blvd.) and the SC Ballet invite you to enjoy a classic tale of romantic tragedy, Romeo & Juliet. Through this performance, choreographed by the renowned William Starrett, the classic Shakespearean tragedy comes to life through the graceful artistry of ballet in this retelling of the most famous of all love stories. This performance features principal dancers Claire Rapp and Joshua Van Dyke as the star-crossed lovers. Showtime is 7:30 p.m., and admission costs between $35 and $40. Mean Girls Jr. (play)

The Village Square Theater (105 Caughman Rd.) takes you back to the world of The Plastics with its performance of Mean Girls Jr. “Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna but nothing prepared her for the wild and vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. How will this naïve newbie rise to the top of the popularity pecking order?” Showtime is 7 p.m., and tickets cost $18, $15 for seniors, military and students with ID. Wilson Banjo Co. (concert)

Bill’s Music Shop & Pickin’ Parlor (710 Meeting St.) welcomes the Upstate’s own Wilson Banjo Co. to its concert stage. Wilson Banjo Co. is both a band and a banjo-making company, and the group plays classic, traditional and modern bluegrass from 8 to 9 p.m. Admission is a $15 donation, and the snack bar is open. SATURDAY, MARCH 8

Malcolm Jamal-Warner

Chayz Lounge (607 Meeting St.) and Emmy-winning actor, author and spoken-word artist Malcolm Jamal-Warner invite you to enjoy “An Intimate Evening of Poetry and Songs.” Warner weaves heartfelt poetry with soulful music, joined by local vocalist Brittany Turnipseed, saxophonist Connie Sawyer and Rod Foster & Company. 2nd Annual Trinity Car Show

Trinity Baptist Church (2003 Charleston Hwy.) hosts its 2nd annual Trinity Car Show. Its fishing clinic helps you brush up on your technique, whether you’re a casual fisherman or a lifer who needs a quick refresher on how to tie a Palomar knot. Interstate Exiles (concert)

Chicago (musical theater)

The Chapin Theater Company (830 Columbia Ave.) brings Broadway to the Midlands with a production of the popular musical Chicago. This dark but glitzy tale of Roxie Hart, with a book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by Jon Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, is an all-star production on a local stage. Game On: Mario Party

The Irmo Branch Library (6251 St. Andrews Rd.) invites you to celebrate one of the most popular video game characters of all time at its Game On: Mario Party event. Songwriter’s Night (concert)

The SC State Fairgrounds (1200 Rosewood Dr.) hosts the Annual Spring Craftsmen’s Classic on Friday, March 7. Check out original designs and work from hundreds of talented artists and craftspeople from across America. See the creative process in action as many exhibitors demonstrate throughout the weekend. Styles range from the most traditional to the most contemporary. This event runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and admission is $9. Children 6-12 get in for $1, and children under 6 get in free. The Nickelodeon Theater (1607 Main St.) celebrates International Women’s Day with the Femme Film Fest, starting on Friday, March 7. This weekend-long celebration of women’s contributions to film and the arts showcases inspiring full-length features, documentaries, experimental works and shorts, all highlighting women filmmakers, actors and creators. Now that the weather seems to be improving a bit, you might want to head over to Congaree National Park (100 National Park Rd.) on Saturday, March 8 for a Nature Discovery Walk. Join a volunteer park naturalist for a guided hike on the park’s boardwalk trail to learn about the array of flora and fauna that call Congaree National Park home.
