Friday — May 5

“Young Frankenstein” (play)

The Village Square Theatre (105 Caughman Rd.) presents Mel Brooks’ classic “Young Frankenstein,” adapted for the stage. Come and join the fun as Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced “Fronk-en-steen”) inherits his family’s estate in Transylvania and he creates his own kind of monster. Production runs May 5-21. Cinco De Mayo

Join Savage Craft Ale Works (430 Center St. in West Columbia) for its Cinco De Mayo celebration in the biergarten. There will be live music courtesy of Columbia’s own Caribe Latin Sound beginning at 5:30 p.m. This event is free to attend. Visit facebook.com/savagecraftaleworks for more information. 

Art on State

The City of West Columbia hosts its annual artsy block party on the 100-200 blocks of State Street. The event features a nighttime edition of the Meeting Street Artisan Market, live mural art, food, wine and beer, and performances from 20 Ride (a Zach Brown tribute band) along with Marcus Gullen and Reggie Sullivan. The event runs from 5 to 10 p.m. and is free to attend. Find more info at westcolumbiasc.gov.

Saturday — May 6

Strawberry Pick & Play

Visit Clinton Sease Farm (382 Olde Farm Rd.) for its Strawberry Pick & Play event. Your $12 ticket includes a wagon ride to the strawberry patch, a visit with the farm animals, playgrounds, an obstacle course, a jellybean maze, a strawberry activity pack, a strawberry coloring sheet and, of course, strawberry picking. Pickin’ and Piggin’ BBQ Cookoff

Saluda Shoals Park (5605 Bush River Rd. in Columbia) hosts the Pickin’ & Piggin’ BBQ Cookoff. More than 20 of South Carolina’s best barbecue cookers will be on site, and your admission includes an all-can-you-eat barbecue tasting from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and live music. Beer is also available for purchase. Admission is $15 for adults (13 and up) and $5 for children (12 and under). Visit icrc.net for more information. 

Thunderfest ’23 (concert)

If you’re a fan of local music, you’ll enjoy Thunderfest ’23 at the Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College (7300 College St. in Irmo). All the acts at the festival are local, and there will be performances by The Reggie Sullivan Band, Iliana Rose Salsa Band and Station Seven. Showtime is 3 p.m., and tickets are $15. Civil Remedy (concert)

The Rhythm on the River concert series at West Columbia Riverwalk Amphitheater (109 Alexander Rd.) rolls on with a show from local rock band Civil Remedy and a dance performance by Goin’ Dancing. Showtime is 6 p.m., and this event is free to attend. Visit cwcchamber.com for more information. 

Spring Open House

The Lexington County Museum (231 Fox St.) presents its annual Spring Open House. This event will allow visitors to explore the grounds and buildings of the museum and learn about the history of the county. This event will also feature blacksmithing, indigo-dyeing, and cooking demonstrations. Free refreshments will also be provided. ATTILA (concert)

The Atlanta “villains of metalcore,” ATTILA, hit New Brookland Tavern (122 State St. in West Columbia). The band is joined by fellow metal-edged acts Candescent, Severed By Dawn, and Team Deathmatch. Showtime is 7 p.m., and tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Visit newbrooklandtavern.com for more information. 

Pop Up Cat Café

The Hideout in WeCo (118 State St. in West Columbia) hosts a Pop Up Cat Café. The Hideout and Cat Around Town will populate the restaurant’s upstairs dining room with an array of cute kitties for you and the kids to play with and cuddle. Thursday — May 11

Red, White & Brews

Head out to Irmo Town Park (1249 Lexington Ave.) for Red, White & Brews, an evening of hand-selected wines and craft beer from KW Beverage, food from local restaurants, live music from Rhythm 54 and laser tag hosted by CNY Attractions. Tokyo Joe (concert)

The Icehouse Amphitheater (107 W. Main St.) continues the Lexington Live concert series with a performance by popular local act and veteran variety band Tokyo Joe. Showtime is 6:30 p.m., and the event is free to attend. Visit icehouseamphitheater.com for more information. 

Jazz Manouche Project (concert)

The Jazz on the River series continues at the West Columbia Riverwalk Amphitheater (109 Alexander Rd.) with a performance from the Jazz Manouche Project. The free event goes from 6 to 9 p.m. and also features food trucks and rotating vendors. Find more info at facebook.com/jazzontheriversc.

SC Poultry Festival

The annual South Carolina Poultry Festival kicks off with rides and games ($30 all-you-can-ride deal available May 11-12) and Radius Church Centerville and East Wind on the main stage. Opening night goes from 5 to 10 p.m. around Main Street. Festivities continue May 12 and 13. 

Across the County Line

Cinco De Mayo Harvest Dinner

Join City Roots Farm (1005 Airport Rd. in Columbia) on May 5 for a Cinco De Mayo Harvest Dinner. Be prepared for a family-style, four-course farm-to-table dinner by Chef/Owner Kristian Niemi of Bourbon, Black Rooster, F2T Productions and Honey River Catering and friends, featuring seasonal ingredients from local farmers and artisans. There will also be cocktail and wine pairings. Tickets are $85, and dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. Visit f2tproductions.com for more information. 

A Thousand Horses (concert)

The Newberry Opera House (1201 McKibben St.) hosts a performance by A Thousand Horses on May 5. The country and Americana band plays an acoustic set. Country singer/songwriter Kendell Marvel opens the show at 8 p.m. Visit newberryoperahouse.com for ticket information.

Rosewood Crawfish Festival

Head over to the State Fairgrounds (1200 Rosewood Dr. in Columbia) for the annual Rosewood Crawfish Festival. In addition to plenty of delicious crawfish, local arts and crafts and a 5K run, there will be live music from Edwin McCain, The Vegabonds, Jupiter Coyote, Cravin’ Melon, and She Might Get Loud. Sprint Triathlon

Dreher Island State Park (3677 State Park Rd. in Prosperity) hosts a Sprint Triathlon on May 7. This event will include a 750m swim in the lake, a 16-mile bike ride and a 5K run. Unpack the Porch

The Enoree River Winery (1650 Dusty Rd. in Newberry) hosts another edition of its Unpack the Porch series on May 7 with a performance by singer-songwriter Jim LeBlanc. There will also be a food truck on site from Daddy’s Cookout. Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket for their comfort, as well as walk the grounds to see the vines in their various stages of growth before or during each performance.
