Recovery programs suspended during COVID-19 outbreak

What happens to those struggling with substance abuse or misuse during a pandemic?

Due to social distancing and COVID-19 prevention, not everyone will be able to get the help they need. That’s what Lynn Bufka, associate executive director for research and policy for the American Psychological Association, told NBC News.

The Courage Center is a local resource for young people and families dealing with substance misuse.

It is doing its part to limit the spread of COVID-19. That means canceling all their weekly programs for the next 2 weeks.

They’re also canceling the meetings they host for other support groups.

Even without in-person meetings, they are still working to help.

Members of the Monday Night Family Group should reach out to their recovery coaches.

Those who aren’t working with a family recovery coach are encouraged to contact Courage Center Executive Director Adrienne Bellinger.

Bellinger can be reached at 803-369-3915.

Adolescents and young adult peer recovery coaches will connect via text and phone calls over the next 2 weeks.

If your loved one ages 15-26 years could benefit from a coach for substance misuse, contact Brock Sansbury at 803-369-3906.

Those who already attend SMART meetings have been advised to contact Hunter Welch at 803-369-3908 if they need support.

Currently, meetings are scheduled to resume the week of Mar. 30. This includes AA’s Into Action, Anxiety Disorders Support, grief recovery, and Families Anonymous groups hosted at The Courage Center.
