Summer is good time for history lessons

Ilove history. As a descendant of the original German Immigrants that settled in the Dutch Fork in 1752, I want to learn more about the history of my area and the state.

Being the history buff that I am, I have never considered those events that happened in my lifetime of any significant historical value. I think kids today need to experience metal roller skates, phones stuck to the wall and the practice of memorizing phone numbers. I even had the hottest fad of 1975, pet rocks complete with squiggly eyes, along with a few Weeble Wobbles and an Easy Bake Oven. I would have never thought that some of the cultural events in my life would be “history worthy,” however, the State Museum had a program for kids so they could travel 50 years back to explore life during the summer of 1968. They tie-dyed shirts, listened to 60’s music, and more.

I propose that there be an official “Wear 80’s Clothes to Work Day” in Lexington. Who is in with me! Bank tellers, waitresses, and everyone could have a fun work day revisiting those clothes, hairstyles, and music. That would be a fun history moment!

Area museums are a summer history treat. The Lexington County Museum is one of the best and has many programs. The Cayce Museum is just a hop, skip and a short drive. The Dutch Fork Genealogy Society is a place to begin to find those exciting ancestors in your family.

In these last days of summer before school starts, perhaps plan a visit to a museum with friends and family. Theater productions and story time in a cool air-conditioned library is an excellent place to spend these hot and humid days.

Porkchop Productions is presenting RAPunzel at the Chapin and Irmo Libraries. A bored princess, rapping narrator, and bad hair days are included in the production. The program will be held July 31, at 10:30 a.m. at the Irmo Library, and at 2 p.m. at the Chapin Library.

A salute to The American Legion Post 193 honoring four unclaimed veterans and escorting them to be buried at Fort Jackson National Cemetery July 13. These men deserved to be buried with the dignity they earned as soldiers. Thank you American Legion Post 193.
