Suspect dead, U.S. Marshals wounded after Irmo-area shooting

Posted

A suspect is dead and two law enforcement officers wounded following a shooting near Irmo.

On Sept. 29, the U.S. Marshals Service’s Carolina Regional Fugitive Task Force located Georgia fugitive George Curtis, per Karrie Holden, supervisory deputy for the  U.S. Marshal District of South Carolina. Upon locating Curtis, shots were fired with two marshals being wounded. The incident took place at the Extended Stay America hotel on Kinley Road, near the intersection of Interstate 26 and Lake Murray Boulevard, multiple outlets reported.

“During the arrest, Curtis opened fire on task force members and during the exchange of gunfire, two Deputy U.S. Marshals were wounded,” Holden said in a statement. “Both deputies are in stable condition and sustained non-life threatening injuries.”

According to the statement, Curtis was pronounced dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Holden stated that Curtis was wanted by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office in Augusta, Georgia for child rape, aggravated child molestation, aggravated sexual battery and two counts of child molestation.

The marshals didn’t disclose how Curtis was located.

A spokesperson for the state Law Enforcement Division told the Chronicle that the agency was requested by the marshals to investigate the officer-involved shooting, adding that more information will be released.

This is a developing story and will continue to be updated.
