Taking all your golf answers

It’s hard to believe that the US Open will be played the same week as both college and pro football gets started.

It’s quite unusual, but a wonderful opportunity to set up the lesson with questions:

•Can you set your TV to video record the event then go express your golf enthusiasm on the course?

•Remember the best time of year to play golf?

•What time does it get dark? (FYI, the official time for sunset is considerably earlier than when it is to dark to play.)

•How early does it get light? (FYI, you can play golf well before official sunrise.)

•If there are numero us people not reading this article, what will they be doing this weekend?

•When there are very few people playing golf, you have the course to______ (fill in the blank) and you can play______ holes?

•What are the advantages of playing fast?

•If you play more golf, you can learn to play_____?

I’ll provide the answer key next week. It’s now time to recognize some local performances.

Nancy Dodge of Mid-Carolina Club led her team of Lee Coulter, Decky Jones and Kerry Rutan to victory in the Women’s South Carolina Golf Association 1 Day state tournament at Timberlake Country Club by shooting the winning gross score of 134.

Finishing 2nd low net was the Timberlake CC team of Jayme Bonkhe, Lori Leslie, Pat Rhodes and Paulette Murphy.

High schools’ girls golf has started with some great performances by some Midlands players and teams.

Maggie Pery of White Knoll had 2 personal best rounds last week in her high school matches. She shot a 62 on 9 holes in a match at the beginning of the week and a 58 to better her personal best by 4 later in the same week.

On Sept. 8, Mid Carolina Club hosted the Palmetto Preview with teams from all parts of South Carolina.

Lexington High’s Molly Hardwick shot a 6-underpar (67) to take 1st place by 1 shot. Lady Wildcat teammate Isabella Rawl shot even par to finish tied for 5th.

On September 11, the Ponderosa Country Club held the Patriot’s Day Invitational and Kennedy Gooding of Gilbert High School shot 6-under-par (66) to take first with Karlee Vardas of Lexington High School finishing 1 shot behind at five-under-par (67). Hardwick placed 3rd.

The Lexington County Recreation and Aging Commission’s Family Junior Fall season registration is underway.

This program features the entire family participating in golf and learning together with parents having numerous options.

Constructed to look a bit like youth T-ball, coaches pitch baseball and the introductory youth soccer programs, parents are “on the field.” They can serve as golf guides, caddies or even player-partners.

This is a brand-new Grow Golf Now curriculum that offers both fundamental methods based on skill along with strategies on playing the game.

For more, go to the LCRAC website, find Athletics, then “click here” in the last paragraph of the description to find Family Junior Golf program.

This Family Junior program is now looking for community volunteers to serve much like youth league baseball, soccer, basketball, and football coaches

This golf program’s roots actually go back to 1992 with LCRAC. There is no golf experience or background necessary, just an interest in being involved in Recreational youth sports.
