Teachers earn $20K in grants

25 Lexington District 2 teachers have received $20,000 in grants.

Teachers applied to for Colonial Life’s Strong Schools grants of up to $1,000 to purchase equipment and resources.

Colonial Life has funded nearly $120,000 to Richland School District 1 and Lexington School District 2 educators through the Strong Schools Grant program.

The grants are administered with the help of the United Way of the Midlands.

Grant recipients were recognized at a luncheon Aug. 15 at the Lexington 2 Innovation Center in Cayce. They are:

• Airport High School: Amanda Altman, Mary Elizabeth K. Owen, Odaliz Martinez-Cruz and Stephanie Bailey

• Brookland-Cayce High School: James Brown

• Congaree Elementary School: Lorri Wood

• Congaree/Wood Early Childhood Center: Sarah Weatherly and Karen Williams

• Cyril B. Busbee Creative Arts Academy: John Hunter Reese

• New Bridge Academy: Beverly Rucker, Suzette Brunson and T. Lynn Moseley

• Pine Ridge Middle School: Amanda Chapman and Maggie Cusey

• R.H. Fulmer Middle School: Alexis Deese-Smith, Jessica Jeffers Goings and Jessica Zearfoss

• Riverbank Elementary School: Kim Addy, Brittany Staples, Brooke Jones, Kathy Siebert and Sherry Wright

• Springdale Elementary School: Kim Gibson, Sherry Page and O’Neta Poovey

Who’s new

• Major Josh Greb has joined Boyer Commercial Construction as an Assistant Project Manager.

Major Greb recently transitioned from Active Duty after serving over 12 years in the Marine Corps.

Greb graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2007 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.

Boyer Commercial Construction, Inc. is a veteran owned general contractor, construction manager, and design builder headquartered in Columbia.

• Columbia Eye Clinic welcome Jae Youn Sarah Lee, M.D. to the practice.

Dr. Lee specializes in ophthalmic and cataract surgery and comprehensive ophthalmology.

She sees patients at Columbia Eye Clinic’s 3 offices in downtown Columbia, Northeast Columbia and Lexington.

Lexington grad earns scholarship

Independent mortgage lender Guild Mortgage has awarded 10 academic collegiate scholarships to students pursuing continuing education.

Lexington’s Grace Ann Martin is one of the recipients. She will attend Liberty University in the fall.

Winners are awarded $1,500 to be applied to accredited colleges, community colleges, trade schools, and undergraduate and graduate degree programs in any field of study.

Fly to Texas, nonstop

United Airlines will resume nonstop service from Columbia Metropolitan Airport to Houston, Texas beginning Sunday, Oct. 6.

In 2019, over 659,000 passengers have traveled through CAE, which is an 18.64% increase over the same period in 2018.

American Airlines offers nonstop service to New York/LaGuardia, and Delta Air Lines added a second nonstop flight to New York/ La Guardia.

Tyson chicken recall

Tyson Foods Inc. is recalling approximately 39,078 pounds of Weaver brand frozen chicken patty product.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service found it may be contaminated with extraneous materials.

The frozen, fully cooked chicken items were produced Jan. 31, 2019.

Products included in the recall are 26-oz. resealable plastic bags containing “Weaver chicken breast patties breaded chicken breast patties with rib meat” with a best if used by date of “Jan312020” and lot code 0319PBF0617, 0319PBF0618, 0319PBF0619, 0319PBF0620, 0319PBF0621, 0319PBF0622, 0319PBF0623, or 0319PBF0600.

Consumers are urged to throw away the product or return it to the purchasing store.

The problem was discovered after the recalling firm notified FSIS of consumer complaints.

Lake Murray cleanup

Community volunteers will work together to clean up Lake Murray Sept. 21.

Join PalmettoPride, Keep the Midlands Beautiful, US Coast Guard Auxiliary Lake Murray and other individuals will participate in the Splash Against Trash cleanup event.

The event will start at 9 am and will be coordinated with the help of Richland County Sheriff’s Department, Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, Richland County Solid Waste, Lexington County Solid Waste and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Region 3.

Volunteers of all ages are welcomed and invited to participate in the event.

Cleanup supplies will be provided the morning of the event or can be picked up early at the Keep the Midlands Beautiful office located in West Columbia.
