Teenager dies in overpass leap

Two people in Lexington County tried it – and survived.

The latest in Columbia did not.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts released the name last week of a teen-aged girl who died July 2, as a result of jumping from the Westmore Drive overpass at I-277, Columbia.

Destiny Crystal Cross, 17, of Humphrey Drive, Columbia died at the scene.

An autopsy indicated she was killed by blunt force trauma to her head from the fall.

In May, Lexington PD was dispatched to Augusta Road at I-20 where an unidentified male dressed in black jumped from the overpass. He landed in a construction area below between the interstate traffic lanes. He was taken to the hospital and survived.

On June, I-26 at Piney Grove Road was blocked as several emergency crews responded to an unidentified person who jumped from the Piney Grove Road overpass into the westbound lanes of I-26. The Lexington County Sheriff’s Dept. responded.

The jumper was transported for further medical treatment at a local hospital.

The Chronicle does not identify suicide or attempted suicide victims unless requested by the families or local police.
