Tennis season ends for Lexington County teams

Posted

The high school tennis season is over for local boys teams.

Four champions were crowned last week as the semifinal and final rounds were played. 11 Lexington County schools qualified for the postseason, but only one made it to the final week.

Lexington was the furthest-advancing local program. The Wildcats qualified for the Lower State Championship game, but lost to Wando 5-1.

Ethan Holt had Lexington’s lone win, beating Adrian Bustamante in three sets.

It was a solid season for the Wildcats. The team snapped River Bluff’s region title streak after going undefeated in conference play.

Lexington earned a first-round bye in the postseason before coming out in the second round and beating West Ashley 6-0.

The Wildcats hosted James Island in the third round, winning 4-2 to earn a spot in the game against Wando.

Lexington was not the only area team Wando knocked out.

River Bluff made it to the third round and played the Warriors before the Wildcats. The Gators also lost their match 5-1, with Braydon Jeffcoat getting his team’s only point.

Jeffcoat is one of the most exciting individual players in the state. He has multiple All-State nods and appearances in the individual tournament, despite being just a junior.

Dutch Fork also qualified for the 5A Division I playoffs but lost in the first round to JL Mann.

Chapin and White Knoll faced off in the first round of the Division II bracket. The Eagles easily disposed of the Timberwolves in a 6-0 win.

Irmo was also eliminated in the first round, losing to Berkeley 4-2.

Chapin advanced out of round two as well, beating Lugoff-Elgin, 5-1. The team’s luck ran out in the third round, following a 5-1 loss to the eventual state champions, Myrtle Beach.

No teams advanced past the second round in the lower classifications.

Airport, Gilbert and Batesburg–Leesville all went one-and-done in the 4A and 3A brackets.

Gray Collegiate knocked off region rival North Augusta, 5-1, to advance to the second round. There, the team’s run came to an end following a 6-0 loss to Bishop England.

Brookland-Cayce also advanced past the first round but was eliminated after a 5-1 loss to South Aiken.
