May 6-10, is a time for us to recognize the dedicated men and women who have bravely chosen to serve in our jails and prisons.

Correctional officers oversee the day-to-day activities of those arrested, awaiting trial or sentenced to serve time.

COs are charged with ensuring the safety of inmates currently incarcerated.

They keep order in housing quarters, supervise daily activities and assist in offender rehabilitation.

Officers working in correctional facilities screen visitors, prevent contraband from entering the buildings, educate inmates, and enforce policies and regulations.

Detention professionals within the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department are certified Class II Law Enforcement Officers in the state of South Carolina.

Applicants for correctional positions go through an 8-step employment process, including a polygraph and psychological evaluation before they begin work.

Once accepted for employment with LCSD, detention officer candidates attend a 3-week Basic Detention training program at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.

Applicants must: be 21 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, be a US Citizen, have a clear criminal history, and be of sound morals and ethics.

This position has a starting salary of $36,891, with a retirement plan and insurance benefits.

The Lexington County Detention Center is responsible for the security of hundreds inmates on a daily basis.

We receive approximately 29 new inmates and release around the same number every day.
