Posted

The 155th anniversary of Sherman’s march on Columbia was Saturday. Called Columbia’s Longest Day, it is the day that General William T. Sherman’s troops shelled the capital city from across the Congaree River. The Union re-enactors were located on the West Columbia side of the Congaree River at the Waterfront walkway. Cannons and muskets were stationed on both sides of the Congaree River. West Columbia City Councilman Mickey Pringle fired the 1st cannon shot. Frank Knapp, President and CEO of the Small Business Chamber of Commerce and President of the Knapp Agency, fired the 2nd cannon.
