The Grind: Twin connection fuels Gray Collegiate’s championship push

Posted

One look is all it takes.

Victoria Coleman makes her run toward the net without saying a word. She doesn’t have to. Her twin sister Vanessa already knows exactly where she’ll be.

“It’s just a connection we have on the field,” Vanessa said. “If  I get the ball, I can find her, give her a good direct ball. It's just too cool to describe.”

For 14 years, the Coleman sisters have come as a package deal. That connection was formed back when they were kids, just starting to learn soccer together.

The sisters first got into sports at the age of four. Aside from soccer, the twins tried basketball and dance, but neither of those stuck.

“We didn’t like it,” Vanessa said. “I’m just better with my feet.”

Once soccer clicked, it quickly became the center of everything the girls did. The pair dedicated their free time to training, traveling across the country for opportunities and never settling.

Constant progression is the goal, so that no matter who they are faced up against, their team stands a chance to win.

“Nothing now is set for good,” Victoria said. “We want constant improvement of everything. It’s never good enough.”

That mentality was instilled in the twins from a young age. Their parents are a big motivating factor for having dedicated a lot of time and energy to getting them the best opportunities.

“We wouldn’t be here without our parents,” Victoria said. “They are pushing us, saying what we need to work on, what they believe we can do better on. They give feedback and take us everywhere.”

Their grandmother’s support also means the world to the twins, as she continues learning the intricacies of the game. Victoria additionally credits her boyfriend for being in her corner for the past two years.

With just a few games left to go in their high school careers, the twins need that support system more than ever.

Gray Collegiate is preparing to enter the postseason with championship aspirations. The War Eagles finished the regular season (23-2-1) and went (13-1) in region play for first place.

The Coleman sisters were a big reason for that success.

Victoria led the entire team in points this season, scoring 30 goals and nine assists as a striker. Vanessa had six goals and eight assists as one of the team’s top midfielders.

“I score more than her,” Victoria joked.

While Victoria does score more, she said that Vanessa is a bit more fine-tuned in the skills and footwork department.

When it all comes together, they are one of the most effective soccer duos in the state.

After high school, the twins plan to continue their soccer careers at South Carolina State University. The opportunity to contribute right away on a Division I soccer team was too good to pass up.

“ We saw how the program was, and we wanted to step in and make it better,” Victoria said.

Choosing the Bulldogs is already paying off, as the team’s coach was able to get them connected with a coach for the Nicaraguan national team. The twins will go to San Diego in May to show off their abilities and hopefully earn a spot on the team.

“It’s going to be really big for us,” Vanessa said. “ It's basically just the start of it. Really, he's going to evaluate the team and see if he wants to add more or keep it as is.”

Beyond their college playing days, the twins are hoping to stay involved in soccer while also pursuing careers in business management.

Victoria even wants to get her real estate license. But above all, she just wants to “get some money.”

“She’s not lying,” Vanessa said while laughing.

No matter what the future has in store, one thing isn’t changing: they’ll always be right at each other's sides.
