The painful truth about migraines

Posted

Some have battled migraines since childhood. Some are still fighting.

Migraines are triggered by hormonal changes, certain foods or drinks, and stress.

Trigger foods can include eggs, tomatoes, onions, wheat (including pastas), citrus fruits, nitrites, alcohol (especially red wine), caffeine, MSG, aspartame, chocolate, aged cheese, and nuts.

Keep a diary of all foods and activities.

This helps your doctor with a treatment plan.

Naproxen (Aleve) and Ibuprofen can be taken for pain. Use an ice pack and sit in a dark room to help soothe a migraine.

If you are at work and unable to leave, try cutting off the lights in your office.

Make sure to also blink your eyes while working on a computer.

For every 30 minutes of screen time, look away at something farther for 15 seconds. This will reduce eye strain.

Some have found essential oils, such as lavender to help.

Yoga has been known to help as well.

To all who have battled and are still fighting, I applaud your strength.
