The passing of a championship coach

Fromer Lexington 2 Board Member Jerry Chitty passed away, July 7 at age 79.

Chitty dedicated his professional life to public school children. Until his retirement, he raised money for Ath letics at Newberry College. In 1971, he coached the Bamberg-Ehrhardt basketball team to the Class AA State Championship.

Coach Chitty developed a special relationship with this team that has followed all of them through the years. Coach Chitty’s guiding philosophy in sports and life was that “no one is better than anyone else.”

West Columbia Councilwoman Erin Porter and neighbor Tonya Mozenko reminded us this week that the Westover Homeowners Association has a calendar of food truck appearances on Mohawk Drive.

The food trucks are to be in the gravel parking lot under the Dominion power line right of way, adjacent to the botanical gardens entrance. Riverbanks Zoo is allowing use of the area to accommodate trucks away from road and accessible for neighbors. The 1st food truck appeared July 8 when the Cafe Strudel Food Truck was there.

Sal’s Produce is listed for every Tuesday. Carolina Cooking, Chillen Cow, Crab Shack, Haughtey Dog and Sweet Dreams Edible Cookie Dough are among others scheduled to come.

TONYA MOZENKO’S son Tristan got a call from his recruiter and left July 12 for US Marine boot camp. Tonya is proud of her boy but said it is hard saying good-bye.

THE CITY of Cayce had a steady stream of residents coming by City Hall to pick up masks July 9. The masks were being distributed until 5 pm or ran out at the Cayce City Hall drive through. You could get 2 for individuals and 5 for families. Cayce City hall is at 1800 12th Street in Cayce.

If you have a question about the distribution, call 796-9020.
