The value of a ‘Tool Box’

Dustin Johnson now has a green champions jacket with The Masters’ Trophy to go along with a number 1 world golf ranking.

It doesn’t get any better. He will enjoy this holiday season unlike any other.

Johnson grew up here locally and his parents and grandparents still reside here. While this is a guess, for I have not spoken with him since his victory at Augusta, he will work hard in the offseason to put his game in position to defend The Masters’ championship.

He will want to put his own jacket on himself.

Johnson is young enough and talented enough to win many majors championships and with his new found putting skill, it’s very possible.

Even with this physical skill, talent and confidence, his greatest asset in my opinion, is moving to the next shot without regard to the previous. He has a cool western style swagger that is easily identifiable, but exudes peace patience and confidence.

Another golfer that has this exceptional attribute of moving on effectively to the next shot, always looking forward, is my son Wesley.

He missed the cut in his last event in Mexico, but healed up quickly. He took an unplanned early flight back, arriving at home with a refreshed perspective. He arrived with a box of toys that will enhance his offseason training.

At least 1 of Wesley’s toys included a Flight Scope which measures detailed variables associated with ball flight and contact impact, along with the swing itself. The machine offers ball flight details on distance, spin, trajectory, club speed, ball speed and much more.

Wesley’s “Toy Box” inspired this week’s lesson which is in parts:

- Feedback provided by technology can be used to enhance performance. There is one proven fact about human behavior. We respond to feedback on results. Here’s the catch with technology as I see it. How much feedback is actually necessary and how much of the feedback should we apply or act on. There is only so much time in the day and our training season is really short. So you may consult a golf expert to help you determine what to invest your time in.

•Indoor training is now available at a very special golf venue called the Main Event which is down town Columbia on Main street. There are amazing Indoor Golf simulation options, with 5 Swing Suites on the Main Floor. These are open to the public. There are also 5 Swing Sweets including a Virtual Putting Suite on the 3rd Floor that are for Players Club members only.

•There are memberships are available and email Head Professional Scott Olliges at Solliges@playersclubsc.com. Also the website is https://www.maincoursesc.com/players-club.

December and with holidays just around the corner means the opening of the “Winter Tour.” The Purpose of this program is for families to spend time together, over golf.

This recreational-based program allows parents to participate as caddies, course guides or fans for their youth golfers interested in learning the game. The program is designed for those brand new to college prep, ages 7-18. It’s a strategical-based program where learning takes place on the links.

In closing, 1 final idea that Bob Rotella suggested many years ago.

Go find young children new in the game and just watch them without coaching or teaching them. Keep them safe but ask them questions.

Avoid offering any advice at all because, Rotella said, “kids get it.”
