Tim Whipple Wins No. 800

Posted

Add another milestone in the legendary coaching career of Tim Whipple.

This past Saturday night in the Temple of Doom, the thirdranked Irmo boys’ basketball team routed Chapin 69-36.

More important than his team’s seventh straight was Whipple getting his 800th career victory. He only trails former Great Falls’ head coach John Smith’s career total of 943 wins and was comfortable with the prospect of not surpassing that S.C. High School League mark.

“That’s not even in the equation at all,” said Whipple, who’s in his 41st season as Irmo head coach. “This is the last milestone I believe.”

Whipple could also not remember a recent contest where his team held an opponent scoreless. This occurred in the second quarter when the Yellow Jackets (8-1) outscored the Eagles 23-0.

At one point, there were five Irmo players with more points than the entire Chapin roster. Senior guard Dylan Williams scored 14 of his game-high 15 points in the first half.

Juice Keitt scored 13 points and had five assists. Madden Collins finished with 11 points and had three steals and Devin Binyard added 10 points.

Following the game, players, family members and school officials held up “800” signs to honor Whipple. While Whipple thanked all the players, assistant coaches and school officials for their support during his long career, he also received his share of congratulatory messages on Twitter.

“Congrats to @TBWhipple on win #800,” said longtime rival and former Lexington High School boys’ basketball coach Bailey Harris. “That is an absolutely amazing stat, especially when you realize he did it all at the same school and all at the 4A/5A level. Unreal. Unfortunately, I contributed to way too many of those 800 Ws!”

Irmo will participate in the Chick-Fil-A Classi at River Bluff High School Dec. 27-30 and will open against W.J. Keenan in the American bracket.

“I try not to put any more emphasis on one victory or one game than any other,” Whipple said. “So, I’ll enjoy this at some point and time. Right now, it’s just another game for me.”
