It was a tough Dec. 17 for ranked Chronicle Country basketball teams.
Both number one boys’ teams Lexington and Gray Collegiate were defeated on the final day of the Bash at Ridge View high School.
Meanwhile, both the ranked Lexington and Gilbert girls’ teams lost their opening games at the Christmas Classic at Wildcat Gymnasium.
A steal and basket with 17 seconds left by Micah Robinson, who had a game-high 16 points and 11 rebounds, was the difference in the victory by Oak Hill Academy and former Ridge View head coach Yerrick Stoneman.
Just like the 54-52 loss to Combine Academy on the opening night, the War Eagles had an opportunity to win following a missed free throw. Montraivis White missed the jumper and Oak Hill Academy claimed the rebound to run out the clock.
It was White’s three-pointer with 44 seconds left that gave Gray Collegiate a 52-50 lead. On Oak Hill Academy next possession, Bronson Schmidt-Uili put back an offensive rebound with 18 seconds left to tie the game.
The Warriors were unable to capitalize off a Gray Collegiate turnover in regulation. In the first overtime, White scored off a turnover to tie the game at 54-54 to force the second overtime.
White finished with a team-high 13 points, Mychell Mitchell had 11 points and 10 rebounds and Treyvon Maddox and L.J. Britt each had 10 points for Gray Collegiate.
Donte Russo-Nance had 13 points and Zion Pipken added 12 for Oak Hill Academy, which went 2-1 at The Bash.
A game-high 26 points from guard Cam Scott was not enough to keep the top-ranked Lexington boys from suffering its second loss of the season.
The 82-63 defeat to Huntington Prep at The Bash at Ridge View High School saw the Wildcats outrebounded 41-28 and allow 42 points in the paint.
A 10-0 run to close out the first quarter gave Huntington Prep the lead the rest of the game. After trailing 31-18, Lexington made a 8-0 run capped by a short jumper from Jaxon Prunty to cut the deficit to five points.
A layoff off a turnover by Dillon Tingler gave Huntington Prep a 33-26 halftime advantage. It outscored the Wildcats 49-38 in the second half to pull away for the win.
Ronald Jessemy had 15 points, Jordan McCullum finished with 13 points and nine rebounds and Larry Johnson scored 11 for Huntington Prep.
Lexington (5-2) now heads to Kingsport, Tenn. for the Alpha Invitational starting Dec. 20.
Te’Andre Simmons scored 22 points and grabbed five rebounds, Maddie Collins had 17 points and six assists and Brandon Crawford finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and seven blocked shots for the sixth-ranked Yellow Jackets.
