On Thursday, June 12, at noon, the Town of Irmo will be hosting a celebration to honor women veterans.

This will take place on the front lawn of Irmo Town Hall, located at 7300 Woodrow St.

Light refreshments will be served, and the event will be hosted by Shelly Langston, USN, S.C. Ambassador for the Military Women’s Memorial and the Town of Irmo.

This celebration commemorates President Harry Truman’s signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act on June 12, 1948. This granted women a permanent role in the military and declared Women Veterans Recognition Day on June 12.

According to the Women's Memorial website, over three million women have volunteered to serve since the American Revolution.
