Traffic signaling to cut time on US 378

You may have noticed cables being installed on Sunset Boulevard in Lexington.

Crews are installing fiber optic cable for the adaptive signalization system, Lexington Mayor Steve MacDougall told the Chronicle.

The adaptive traffic system will reduce travel times on the US 378 corridor to West Columbia.

The system will adjust signals through the day and evening to improve efficiency in traffic flow based on current conditions.

This is phase 2 of the project which will tie 16 intersections into the 19 already on the system, he said.

A similar plan on Mount Pleasant’s US Highway 17 showed an average 25% reduction in travel time thanks to the system.

Key intersections on the US 378 corridor see up to 38,800 vehicles a day, according to SC Department of Transportation data.

Interstections in phase 2 include those at US-378/ US-1 and:

• Lexington Pavillion

• Hope Ferry Rd./Tom Corley Rd.

• Mineral Springs Rd.

• Palmetto Park Blvd.

• Whiteford Way/Lowes

• Scotland Dr./Kohl’s

• Old Cherokee Rd./ Mallard Lakes Dr.

• Wal-Mart

• Conventry Dr./Home Depot

• Berley St.

• K-Mart/Lexington Medical Center

• Gibson Rd.

• Barr Rd.

• Harmon St.

• Library Hill Lane

• Cedarcrest Dr.
