Trash pickup rates to rise for some in county

Posted

Lexington County residents may soon pay a lot more for trash pickup.

Those in the Chapin, Gaston and Swansea areas will see higher curbside pickup rates in coming months.

This is the 3rd rate change for county residents since November 2018.

Residents in northern and southwestern parts of the county saw their pickup rates rise up to 72% starting Dec. 31, 2018.

Lucky residents south of Lake Murray and in the Irmo area saw their rates fall last November.

Expiring contracts with curbside collections services are to blame for rate changes.

County spokesperson Harrison Cahill said that before December, pickup fees had not increased since 2009.

Curbside pickup rates in the Chapin area of District 1 will increase to $26.45 a month – up 60% – starting April 1.

Backdoor collection will increase to $40.45. Customers can contact Capital Waste Services at www.Capwasteservices.comor call 803-814-0040.

Gaston and Swansea customers in District 5 will be divided into urban and rural service areas April 1.

The urban service area will be north of Edmund Highway, Gator Road and Glenn Road. Curbside collection will increase to $33 per a month – up 48%. Backdoor collection rates will increase to $66 a month.

The rural service area will be south of these roads and will see the same increases.

District 5 customers with questions can contact Tyler’s Sanitation at 803-626-9000.
