Turning a dream into reality

Lexington couple creates a new kind of memory care

Skip and Joy Deupree are owners of Westminster Memory Care in Lexington. This is part 2 in a series.

Skip and Joy Deupree’s passion led them to Lexington.

Their dream of creating a loving and nurturing environment for people with memory impairment has resulted in 7 facilities across the South, including their most recent here.

Attention to the “little things” makes a world of difference to residents, Skip says.

Things like spacious rooms with high ceilings, TV in the rooms, windows that open, heat lamps in the bathrooms and floor lights help residents get around safely.

Common areas have plenty of natural light, which increases residents’ appetites. Other features include rocking chairs, walking trails and activities.

Each facility has tornadoand storm-proof conference room and a community room where Rotarians, Lions Club, bridge and churc groups can meet.

The Deuprees moved to Lexington in December 2019 when Joy began her work at the UofSC College of Nursing as an associate dean and professor.

The 2 were impressed with lake living and the sense of community in Lexington, and couldn’t be happier living in the Saluda River area.

They also enjoy traveling and spending time with their 5 grandchildren, 3 girls and 2 boys.

They have raised 3 daughters who are blazing their own trails.

Scarlotte, the oldest, was Miss Alabama and has been living in Guatemala where her husband is part of a team building the US Embassy there. Unfortunately, covid-19 has halted construction.

Middle daughter Jenna is a neonatal nurse in Charlotte, NC, where she lives with her engineer husband.

Youngest daughter Julie is a surety bond underwriter in Birmingham where she and her husband also own a reclaimed wood products business.

Skip said deal making is what drives him.

He is always looking for new ways to give back to his community.

He sounds like a true Lexingtonian already.
