W. Columbia opens new bike lane

The City of West Columbia intends to make biking safer.

The city held a B Avenue Bike Lane ribbon cutting June 13, at the Community Center, 754 B Avenue.

The lane was created to give bikers more space to ride safely.

West Columbia Mayor Bobby Horton and Mayor pro-tem Tem Miles spoke of the new bike trail’s benefits.

State Sen. Nikki Setzler, Rep. Micah Caskey and City Council members attended.

Horton called the bike lane another successful project that improves the quality of life in West Columbia. He said the bike path increases access to the shops and restaurants from Riverwalk to Triangle City.

Miles thanked the SCDOT and said the bike trail has been 5 years in the making.

It helps since there are no sidewalks on 4B Avenue.

City Communications Director Anna Huffman thanked Grants and Special Projects Director Tara Geenwood for her persistence to make the bike trail possible.

In January, the city installed 3 bicycle repair stations at Reeves Park, 754 B Avenue; Moffatt Street entrance to the Riverwalk; and at Riverwalk Park, 109 Alexander Road.
