Lexington County School District Three confirmed that a student from Batesburg-Leesville Primary School brought a weapon to school on Tuesday, Oct. 21.
According to district administrators, the weapon was an unloaded handgun found in the student’s bookbag. The statement said administrators and the school resource officer acted swiftly after the discovery.
“No ammunition was found and at this point in the investigation, it is not believed that the student made any direct threats towards the school or other students,” the statement reads.
The district sent a message out to all families, and classes continued as scheduled on Wednesday.
“Please know that our highest priority in Lexington Three is the safety of our students and staff members. To be very clear, Lexington Three takes school safety very seriously and any student or adult who jeopardizes our safe learning environment will be subject to the highest discipline and punishment allowed by the state law and school board policy.”
