Week 9 Victories Set up Region Title Games to End Regular Season

Posted

Milestones and near clarity with the postseason were the theme of Friday’s Week Nine high school football games.

Wins by Lexington, Dutch Fork, Brookland-Cayce, and Gilbert set up region title matchups next week for the respective teams. Other teams like White Knoll and Batesburg-Leesville also helped their post-season chances.

Gilbert 56, Brookland-Cayce 21

Prior to head coach Chad Leaphart’s return to his alma mater in 2017, the Indians had never won a region title.

Next week, the program can claim its fourth region title with a win against Brookland-Cayce in “Gilbert America.”

“That's as big one right here at the end of the schedule,” said Leaphart, who claimed his 64th career win at Gilbert. “Us and Brookland-Cayce have really developed into a rivalry over the years. Us and them have played a lot of games with the region championship on the line. We've got some, they've got some. They’e got a good football team this year and it should be exciting, exciting game next week at Tomahawk Stadium.”

The hyphenated “Thunder and Lightning” backfield of Jaden Allen-Hendrix and Alias Graham-Woodberry combined for 556 rushing yards and five touchdowns at Memorial Stadium.  Allen-Hendrix finished with 227 yards and three touchdowns and Graham-Woodberry had 229 rushing yards to surpass 1,000 yards on the season and two touchdowns.

Quarterback Drake Braddock threw two touchdowns and the Indians defense collected three touchdowns. Dreher quarterback Luka Cruz threw for 183 yards and two touchdowns and Fred Singletary rushed for a score.

Leaphart is hopeful as the secondary gets healthier, it will cut down on the big plays given up on defense.

“We’ve just got to be sound and with B-C next week in particular, you know, we're very similar,” Leaphart said. “So, they’re going to run the ball, run the ball, run the ball, run the ball, and then throw it over our head. So that's tough. But if you can stop people on first and second down and make things a little more predictable, then that that's key for our defense and that’s the key to their defense.”

Dutch Fork 56, River Bluff 7

Shrine Bowl running back Jarvis Green reached a pair of personal high marks for the top-ranked Silver Foxes.

He had all five rushing touchdowns in the first half and his 191 rushing yards helped Green surpass the 1,000-yard mark this season. Green also caught two of quarterback Aliam Appler’s three touchdowns of 65 and 42 yards to tie Stephen Davis’ school record with seven touchdowns.

Appler finished with 257 passing yards.

Green’s eight touchdowns tied the school record held by Stephen Davis.

The win extended the Silver Foxes’ in-state winning streak to 44. It was also their 40th straight road win and 31st in region play.

Dutch Fork did have its scoreless streak end at 12 quarterbacks. With 32 seconds left, River Bluff running back Cooper Johns scored on a 56-yard touchdown run.

Johns finished with 132 rushing yards.
