Week 3 High School Football: Six Chronicle Country Teams Stay Undefeated

Posted

The number of undefeated Chronicle Country teams was guaranteed to decrease Friday night.

Pelion arrived at Gilbert High School with a 3-0 record. The Panthers left with their first loss following a 56-3 rout by the Indians.

Jaden-Allen Hendrix accounted for three touchdowns and Alias Graham-Woodberry and Jaylen Jay both rushed for over 100 yards and two touchdowns for Gilbert (3-0). It was career win number 101 and the 61st for head coach Chad Leaphart.

“It's just all about getting better each week and trying to be the best we can, and the guys came out pretty sharp and pretty satisfied with how we played tonight, but still got some room for improvement on some things that we got to do better if we want to make the best we can be,” Leaphart said.

Allen Hendrix opened the scoring with a 43-yard touchdown run 36 seconds into the game. Pelion answered with a 27-yard field goal by Lucas New with 6:47 left in the first quarter for its lone points.

Gilbert closed out the scoring with 49 unanswered points. Allen-Hendrix scored twice on the ground from 33 and three yards to end the first quarter.

Backup quarterback Dustin Braddock connected with starter Chance Jennings for a 30-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter and Allen Hendrix had a three-yard touchdown run to make it 35-3.

Allen-Hendrix scored his third touchdown from one yard in the third quarter. Jay closed out the scoring with touchdown runs of 49 and 46 yards.

Up next is a “Backyard Brawl” at Lexington for the Indians. For Leaphart, it is an opportunity to move closer to surpassing Marty Woolbright, the father of Wildcats’ head coach Perry Woolbright, on the school career win list.

“It's huge,” Leaphart said. “I mean, it is a new rivalry. We've only started playing since 2018. But it really has turned into something big. I think our kids and their kids really look forward to it and the communities look forward to it and it will be a lot of excitement, probably a huge crowd Friday night.”

Despite starting quarterback Aliam Appler and leading rusher Jarvis Green being sidelined, the top-ranked Silver Foxes had their best offensive showing of the season.
