West Columbia City Council approves abandoned buildings for redevelopment at latest meeting

The City of West Columbia discussed multiple topics during their meeting on March 4.

The council unanimously approved four buildings located at 326 Alexander Rd. and 104 Augusta St. to be redesignated as abandoned buildings available for renovation.

The developer, Sycamore and Magnolia, LLC, filed a notice of intent to rehabilitate with the state with the goal of redeveloping the abandoned buildings into property with “multiple commercial, retail and residential rental uses,” according to the resolution on the agenda.

The council announced that the city received a grant from the South Carolina Department of Transportation to repave the stretch of road from Interstate 26 Exit 119 to Exit 111. The city is also currently discussing the need to fix the road off Exit 111A.

“We are in discussions with the contractor about addressing the worst areas first,” District 8 Councilman David Moye said. “The timeline for these spot repairs is still being determined but this project represents a significant step forward to smoother travel.”

In other news, the council unanimously approved after second reading the development of 52 townhouses as well as mixed-retail and residential areas at 620 Sunset Blvd. The council approved a special PUD-C permit for the developers.

Additionally, the council passed a motion 7-1 to allow temporary public alcohol consumption and road closures during the Art on State event on May 9.

The council unanimously passed proclamations to recognize International Women Leaders in Business Day within the city and to honor Vanessa Mota for her local work in connecting different cultures and minority businesses within West Columbia.

“The City of West Columbia does hereby recognize Vanessa Mota for her vision, leadership and service in the West Columbia community,” the resolution read. “The mayor and city council commend Vanessa Mota for her achievements and extend their best wishes for her continued success.”

The council went into executive session to discuss the planned revenue bonds and utility rate report but did not discuss any further business after coming out of executive session.

The next regular West Columbia City Council meeting will be April 2 starting at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
