West Columbia’s Meeting Street Improvement Project aims to boost safety, walkability

Posted

An infrastructure project in West Columbia will bring additional parking, dedicated turn lanes, medians, wider sidewalks and 117 new trees to Meeting Street.

The Meeting Street Road Improvement Project aims to create a safer, more walkable downtown for residents, visitors and local businesses, according to city officials.

According to a Facebook post from the city, about 12,300 vehicles travel Meeting Street each day. The redesigned corridor aims to better accommodate traffic while improving safety and access for pedestrians and cyclists.

The preliminary plan was presented during a regular city council meeting in January. Bidding and construction are expected to begin this year, with completion anticipated by the end of 2026.

City officials say there will be updates and construction notices as the project progresses.
