In a 5A playoff tilt between the White Knoll Timberwolves and Lugoff-Elgin Demons on Friday, the Timberwolves pulled away late to pick up a home playoff victory.
The Timberwolves got a strong performance from quarterback Landon Sharpe, as he proved to be effective through the air and with his legs.
On the game’s first possession, the Timberwolves stopped Lugoff-Elgin on third down when linebacker Josue Esiki and defensive lineman Tyrone Jennings combined for a sack.
After the punt, White Knoll wasted no time to score when running back Sh’Quez Montgomery found the end zone, giving the Timberwolves an early 7-0 lead.
The Timberwolves kept the momentum going when linebacker Keaton Bennett recovered a fumble on the kickoff, giving White Knoll excellent field position. After the turnover, Sharpe found wide receiver Javon Griffin for a 30-yard touchdown. A missed extra point attempt made the score 13-3, White Knoll.
The Demons responded to the early deficit with a long drive that ended in a successful field goal, making it a 13-3 game.
Facing a key third down late in the first half, Sharpe scrambled for a 30-yard touchdown, giving the Timberwolves a 17-point advantage.
Right after the score, the Demons returned a kickoff for a touchdown to cut into the Timberwolves’ lead.
With a 20-10 advantage in the second quarter, the Timberwolves answered with another big run from Sharpe, this time a 43-yarder. However, the drive stalled when White Knoll was stopped on 4th down inside Demons’ territory.
White Knoll’s defense forced a punt by Lugoff-Elgin, giving the ball back to its offense with time for one more drive to end the first half. The Timberwolves got points on the drive thanks to a 35-yard touchdown run by Tiyon Fanning, giving White Knoll a 27-10 lead at halftime.
At the start of the third quarter, both teams traded stops on defense. As the Demons searched for offensive momentum, White Knoll defensive lineman Chris Ferguson stepped up for a sack on third down.
The Timberwolves followed the play with a long drive, but missed a field goal, giving possession back to the Demons.
Lugoff-Elgin made it a 27-18 game behind consecutive big plays from its offense. Early in the fourth quarter, the Timberwolves responded with an impressive drive, highlighted by a 28-yard run by Fanning.
Wide receiver Devin Geronomi made one of the plays of the game when he made a bobbling catch in the end zone for a four-yard touchdown. The score gave the Timberwolves a 34-18 lead.
While White Knoll’s offense continued to find success in the second half, Lugoff-Elgin continued to go backward. Defensive lineman Caleb Caughman recorded consecutive sacks on 3rd and 4th down, giving the Timberwolves possession with excellent field position.
White Knoll followed the turnover on downs with more big plays, this time from Sharpe on the ground. The senior added a 25-yard run to put his offense inside the red zone.
The quarterback ended the drive with the final score of the contest, a two-yard touchdown run, making the final score 41-18, Timberwolves.
White Knoll (6-5) will continue its season on Friday at Myrtle Beach (6-4), while Lugoff- Elgin’s season ends at 4-7.
