Who’s that holding up traffic?

SC bill would curb slow left lane drivers

You’re trying to get to an important appointment - or Grandma’s house.

A slow left lane driver is holding everybody up.

The Senate has passed a bill to restrict cruising in the left lane of an interstate with 3 or more lanes, Majority Leader Shane Massey reported.

Exceptions are for passing when there is no trailing traffic and other factors, the senator who represents Lexington County said.

The bill will now go back to the House.

Several state lawmakers had hoped to make drivers think twice before holding up traffic in the fast lane.

A current law has no penalties.

Their bill would create penalties.

Existing SC law requires drivers to drive on the right side of all roads unless they’re passing another car, making a turn or the right lane is blocked.

It also states that any cars going less than the rate of traffic should move to the right lane.

One proposal was to mak driving slow in the left lane a misdemeanor offense, with a $200 fine and 2 points off your license.

It takes 16 points for a license to be revoked.

Critics say 2 points will raise auto insurance premium costs and is too harsh.
