WIRE golf torunament aids Becky’s Place

Holly, Guide and Light Women Involved in Rural Electrification (W.I.R.E.) members with Mid-Carolina Electri Co-op held its annual Golf Charity Tournament this week. Proceeds were donated to Becky’s Place, which provides wigs and other items to women undergoing cancer treatments.

Many of the volunteers baked cookies and other goodies to give to the participants. The event was held at Golden Hills Country Club. Many thanks to these volunteers: Nicole Addy, Marjorie Durant, Merle Temples, Gail Hall, Regina Ridgell, Janice Ayers, Carla Ardito, Carol Ashton, Jill Parker, Peggy Dantzler, Stacy Nicholson, Maria Sutor, and Gale McCartha.

Pond Branch United Methodist Church invites children to its Fall Festival October 20, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. This is a family-oriented, free event. Children will enjoy a giant slide, bounce house, pony rides, cake walks, photo booth, food, games and prizes. The church is at 1913 Pond Branch Road. For information, call 657-5481.

Susan Wright is having “Move to the Music” dance exercise classes at Beulah United Methodist Church each Tuesday, 3:15-5:30 p.m. Participants are encouraged to stay as long as they wish and donations are welcomed. Mary Rowell invites ladies to attend her REFIT classes at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. REFIT classes last one hour and participants will dance to contemporary Christian music. For information, call 892-2842.

Hollow Creek Community Club members enjoyed playing bingo at the October meeting. It was also their time to select a nominating committee and the members submitted names of members they wanted to serve on a committee. Members with October birthdays were recognized. Betty Balder, Monroe Fulmer, Diane Jumper, Rebecca Koon, O’Neal Sessions, and Sarah Evans. Dane and Nancy Tinman, and Brandon and Bryn Sarvis Rice were recognized as having anniversaries in October. The club meets once a month on Thursday at 7 p.m. For information on joining contact Dale Swygert at 803-917-0195.

,Parents of new Gilbert Pack 60 Scouts enjoyed the orientation class led by Weblos Den Leader Robert Barnes. Pack 60 Scouts are looking forward to a Trunk or Treat night October 23. This is also open to their siblings. Pack 60 Scouts are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes and there is a prize for the best decorated trunk.

Congratulation to Josie Price who was named “Teacher of the Year” at Gilbert High School, and to Bonnie Phillips, who was named Teacher of the Year at Gilbert Middle School. Phillips has taught at GMS for 19 years and this is her first year of teaching sixth grade math.

GMS students are celebrating the new release of the book Soof by Sarah Weeks. The students are making the word SOOF out of objects found in their homes, classrooms, playground and other areas. After they create their words they take a picture of it and send it to author Sarah Weeks. Three winners will be chosen and each will receive an autographed copy of the book.
