It will be a major draw to the river area.

The City of West Columbia is working to construct an all-inclusive, enabling playground and parking area near the West Columbia Riverwalk and Amphitheater.

The park brings families together allowing children with and without disabilities a play space to be used together.

A group called McAdam’s has released a video of the enabling park’s design.

West Columbia Mayor Pro-Tem and Councilman Tem Miles said the staff at McAdam’s are specialists in enabling parks and public spaces. He said planners took feedback from a committee that was assembled by the city to get ideas.

“McAdam’s has designed several enabling parks across the country,” said Miles. It’s why West Columbia contracted with them.

Miles said the park in the video is a good representation of what the final product will look like, but there could be some changes when the park is opened.

Miles also said he is especially excited.

“As the parent of a child in a wheelchair, I can’t tell you how much this park means to me,” said Miles. He said the park also comes with 124 parking spots that can be shared with visitors to the Riverwalk. “That helps us address the demand for parking,” said Miles.

West Columbia City Administrator Brian Carter said the park fits with the city’s plan for progress.

“The creation of the enabling park near the River-walk is another example of the city’s vision for a more vibrant, inclusive, and engaging community,” Carter said.

“Our Mayor (Bobby Horton) and council continue to support exciting opportunities for West Columbia, and the staff at City Hall are committed to carrying out their vision.”
