48 years of BBQ for missions

On Friday, October 5, the Methodist Men of Mt. Hebron UMC fired up the pits.

They needed enough BBQ pork and chicken to feed hundreds of people from the community Oct. 6.

Preparations started weeks ahead of time with building the barbecue pits, splitting firewood and stacking it in the pits.

They cooked around 3700 lbs. of ham, chicken and baby back ribs. In addition, 200 lbs. of rice were cooked, 300 lbs. of slaw prepared, 140 gallons of mustard based sauce mixed and over 125 gallons of hash were cooked.

The Methodist Women held a bake sale that Saturday as well.

The buffet started at 11 a.m. They served around 650 people and sold 700 takeout plates. They raised around $33,000 this year.

This is the biggest missions fund raiser of the year for Mt. Hebron Methodist men. The money raised will support a variety of mission projects. Although the youth of the church sponsor several fund raising projects throughout the year.

In 1971 the men of the church decided to hold a barbecue to raise money for the church building fund.

This year’s event marked 48 years of barbecue for missions. The annual BBQ has evolved into a community event on the Mt. Hebron campus.

They’ve raised around $420,000 since the first year.

In 2017 they generated over $16,000 for missions.

Once the proceeds are determined, church members can submit a request for funds for a particular project.

A few examples are Habitat for Humanity, Volunteers in Missions, Salkahatchie Summer Service, Cub scouts and Boy Scouts, take home snacks for needy elementary school kids, scholarships and numerous other mission projects.

The take home snack packs alone provide 75 bags a week for students at Riverbank Elementary school.
