A short history of Lake Murray

Dam history. I have met so many newcomers who have moved into Chapin and Irmo because of Lake Murray. Did you know the Lexington Water Power Co. started the dam in 1927. 5,000 dis placed local families were paid $15-$45 an acre for 100,000 acres. A dozen towns, 2,232 graves, 6 schools and 3 churches were moved. On Aug. 31, 1929, water started filling the 50,000-acre lake.

During WWII, the Doolittle Raiders practiced bombing 7 islands in the lake.

CONGRATULATIONS to Irmo worship leader Amanda Jason who is 1 of 3 finalists in a Facebook singing competition. She may win an all-expenses-paid trip to Nashville to record with a Grammy-nominated producer.

EARLY CHAPIN Town Hall voting will open 8-5 pm on Oct. 26 and at Irmo Town Hall 8-5 pm on Oct. 22 and 23.

IRMO’S drive-in movie night is Oct. 31 at Anchor Lanes. Gates open at 4:30 pm. The movie will begin at dark. Parking is limited. Admission is free but vehicle passes must be reserved at greaterirmochamber.com
