Harbison West Elementary School will receive a $200,000 grant through 21st Century Community Learning Centers.

WINGS for Kids is a Charleston-based nationwide after school program focused on social emotional learning.

WINGS serves 130 students at Harbison West Elementary School every day after school, where students and staff learn how to work as a team, manage emotions, and build healthy relationships – all while having fun and being safe.

WINGS for Kids CEO Bridget Laird said, “WINGS is grateful to 21st Century Community Learning Centers and Harbison West Elementary for giving us the opportunity to bring social-emotional learning after school to Columbia.”

The 21st CCLC program is funded by the United States Department of Education through an annual appropriation by Congress.

Funding supports the creation of community learning centers that provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children.

The program helps students meet state standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math; offers students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs; and offers literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children.

Harbison West Elementary School Principal Randy Norman added, “I am excited to continue our partnership with WINGS for Kids.

“The WINGS Program connects with what it means to be a HERO – Hardworking, Empathetic, Respectful, and Open-Minded. I am looking forward to seeing our students grow by participating in the WINGS program.”

Eligible applicants include, single public school districts, individual public schools, private schools, charter schools, community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, Indian tribe or tribal organization, and other public or private entities.
