No one wants to hit an animal on the road.
In suburban and semi-rural Lexington County, it’s an unfortunate part of daily life.
SC Department of Public Safety collects data on reported deer-related crashes across the state.
Data for 2019 is not yet available but the most recent data shows:
• 2,155 deer-related accidents through Nov. 15, 2018.
• 2,460 reported animal accidents in 2017.
The average deer-related claim caused $2,500 in damage to vehicles in 2018, according to AAA Carolinas.
AAA cautions:
• Be especially attentive in the early morning and evening hours as deer and other animals are most active from 5-8 am and 5-8 pm.
• Use high beams when there is no oncoming traffic. Your lights will often reflect off the animal’s eyes and reveal their location.
• Watch for water on the side of the road as it often attracts deer.
• If you spot a deer, slow down and watch for other deer to appear as they rarely travel alone.
• Blast your horn to frighten the animal away from the road.
• Brake firmly. Do not swerve or leave your lane as many crashes from deer are a result of hitting other cars.
• Check with your insurance agent to make sure you have comprehensive coverage that includes animal collision.
If you strike a deer, pull to the side of the road and dial *47 to report the collision to Highway Patrol.
