Quarterback Brady Albro had a record-setting night as Chapin's offense caught fire en route to a 62-21 win over the A.C. Flora Falcons Friday under the lights at Cecil Woolbright Field.
Albro became Chapin’s all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns, surpassing Logan Bailey’s 46 touchdown passes and Roger Pedroni's 5,466 passing yards.
“It was awesome, man. Shout out to the whole line, they gave me all the time in the world to pick them apart,” Albro said after the game. “I didn't know I was close to them, so I'm just glad we went out and we executed and won.”
Chapin’s offense exploded in the team's home opener, moving the ball downfield with ease. The Eagles finished the night with around 500 total yards and nine touchdowns. Albro accounted for four of them, finishing with over 300 yards passing, three touchdowns and one rushing touchdown.
“He's a great quarterback, but he's an even better young man,” Chapin head coach Ryan Cole said. “The kids rally behind him, he's a really good talent, but a really good young man, and he's a competitor. He knows the game.”
This is Chapin’s second game scoring 40+ points after beating Catawba Ridge 47-37 last week.
Running back Colione Martin ran for over 125 yards and scored twice to add to the barrage of scoring. Receiver Khalen Bostick scored two touchdowns with over 100 receiving yards. Even the backups got on the board when quarterback Brock Smith connected with John Rossi for a score.
The game was close for most of the first half with Chapin jumping to an early but slim lead. The Eagles were up 28-21 in the first half and got the ball back with less than a minute until the break.
Instead of taking a knee and going to halftime up a touchdown, the Eagles got aggressive and looked to strike one more time. In five plays the Eagles marched down the field and scored after Albro connected with Stone Furrey for a 50-yard touchdown with nine seconds left.
“Coach Haltiwanger felt like we had a good look against their defense and we decided to go ahead and take a shot there and it worked out well,” Cole said.
The second half was all Chapin. The Eagles piled on five touchdowns in the second half, while A.C. Flora would remain scoreless the rest of the way.
The Eagles found the endzone on their first three possessions to go up 55-21 less than midway through the third quarter.
Albro connected with Bostick for a 38-yard touchdown just two plays into the Eagles’ drive. On their next outing, Anthony Turnbow ran the ball in the endzone from 25 yards. Then, Albro kept it himself on the one-yard line on the team’s next drive to give Chapin a 55-21 lead.
A.C. Flora moved the ball downfield on a few of its drives in the third quarter but they were cut short. Cornerback Peyton Griffin shut down two drives by snagging interceptions and returning them into enemy territory.
“The first play, I was playing cover three, and I just saw the quarterback throw the ball … tried to score but couldn’t get there,” Griffin said. “The second one is all my linebacker just getting the ball out and gave me a chance to make a play.”
Up 34 points with a few seconds left in the quarter, Chapin put in some of its backups, including Smith. The Eagles used the fourth quarter to chew the clock but managed to score one more touchdown on the Smith-to-Rossi connection.
A.C. Flora tried to go out on a high note, marching the ball toward the end zone and making it to Chapin’s three-yard line. It appeared the Falcons would punch one score in and spoil the Eagles’ second-half shutout, but Chapin’s defense punched the ball out of the Falcons’ running back, recovered the fumble and ended the game.
Chapin’s win improved its record to 2-0 in the team’s first two contests under new head coach Ryan Cole. It is the first time since 2021 the Eagles started the season 2-0. The team will prepare for a road contest against Spring Valley next week, looking to improve to 3-0.
“The kids are buying into what we're trying to do, and I think we just try and give each other a chance,” Cole said. “Tell the offense to work for the defense, defense to work for the offense, and we just try and get out there, give us a chance, and we just let the chips fall where they may.”
