Chapin duo succeeds on championship stage, earns Athlete of the Week

Posted

Another championship-filled week has passed, and Lexington County teams showed out with their seasons on the line.

With only baseball, softball and soccer in action last week, only a small handful of local teams are still playing. Despite this, there were still plenty of performances in consideration for Athlete of the Week.

This week’s selections both come from Chapin and led their teams to historically monumental wins in the playoffs.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.

Kaedyn Harris

Chapin baseball’s Kaedyn Harris helped the Eagles reach their first state championship appearance in eight years.

The Eagles swept West Florence in their best-of-three series. Big contributions from the plate by Harris were a big reason why.

In game one of the series, he recorded two hits in four at-bats, scoring two RBIs and a run. He followed that performance with another two-hit, two-RBI game in game two.

Harris put an exclamation mark on the series, scoring the Eagles’ final two runs of game two off a home run to right field.

With the win, Chapin advanced to the state final series against T.L. Hanna. Harris will look to continue his stellar play and guide Chapin to their first state championship in 5A play.

Avery Stoner

Chapin soccer sophomore Avery Stoner helped the team finally get over its state title hump.

The Eagles defeated Eastside 4-0 last week to win the 5A Division II girls soccer championship. Chapin had made the final in each of the previous two seasons but lost.

Stoner scored two of the Eagles’ four goals in the title game. She scored once in the first half to help Chapin extend its early lead.

Then in the second half, Stoner fired in a shot with her off foot from about 32 yards out to put the team up 3-0.

The win marks the end of a highly successful season for Chapin and Stoner. The Eagles finished the year (19-3), with Stoner being second on the team in goals and total points.
