Chapin Football Star Accused of Sexual Misconduct With a Minor

Posted

On Nov. 5, David Bennett Galloway III led the Chapin High School football team to a first-round playoff road victory.

On Nov. 11, the senior running back awaited a bond hearing at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Columbia on charges of 2nd degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor age 11 to 14. Galloway, 18, was released that day on a $45,000 recognizance bond and given a return court date of Dec. 10.

In a news advisory, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott announced the arrest of Galloway for an Oct. 2 incident.

A copy of the incident report in cluded with the advisory, which list Galloway’s offenses as two counts of statutory rape, said the alleged crimes took place in Irmo during a party.

During the court hearing, a deputy referred to one victim who was 13 years old.

A school employee, according to the report, called the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department Oct. 8 to provide information on the incident. It was then turned over to Richland County authorities, which led to Galloway turning himself into investigators this past Thursday.

Galloway was represented by Columbia attorney Jim May at his bond hearing. May told Judge Tobias Ward Galloway had passed a lie detector test administered by a former FBI agent in which he was asked about facts pertaining to the charges.

A victim’s advocate also attended the bond hearing. Her mother requested and was granted an order by the judge for Galloway not to contact her daughter.

Galloway was ordered not to contact the victim and placed under overnight house arrest, which prevented Galloway from playing in this past Friday’s playoff game, lost by the Eagles 44-21.

Galloway finished the season with 1,094 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns and caught 25 passes for 444 yards and 6 touchdowns. He committed to play for North Carolina State in July.

Prior to the hearing, Lexington-Richland School District 5 released a statement.

“Lexington-Richland School District Five is aware of charges against a Chapin High School student,” read a statement released by the district on Thursday. “School District Five and Chapin High School are cooperating with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department in their investigation.

“School District Five will have no further comment at this time.”

The Chronicle reached out to May for comment, but hasn’t received a response.

Chapin High School head coach Justin Gentry also hasn’t responded to the Chronicle’s request for comment. A spokesperson for the district said employees are not being made available to talk about the situation at this time.
