The 2021 American Legion baseball playoffs began Monday.
After a tiebreaker was used to decide a 3-way tie for 1st place in League 3, Lexington Post 7 received a 1st round bye, Chapin/Newberry placed 2nd and Camden Post 17 was 3rd. Camden was placed in 3rd since it lost both meetings with Chapin/ Newberry and Lexington had a better run differential to get the top seed.
Lexington will await the winner of the Best-of-3 series between Aiken Post 26 and West Columbia Post 79. Game 1 was halted due to rain in the top of the 4th with host team Aiken holding a 1-0 lead. The contest resumed Tuesday at Brookland-Cayce High School followed by Game 2.
Chapin/Newberry opened play in the Best-of-3 series with Richland Post 215 with a 10-2 win. Chris Wise had 3 RBI and Dutch Fork’s Cooper French had a 2-run double as Chapin/ Newberry jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the 1st 2 innings.
Pitchers Luke Kennedy and George Schodowski, both of Dutch Fork, and Tyler Wilson combined to allow just 4 hits. With a Game 2 win Tuesday, Chapin/Newberry would face either Camden or Lower Florence in Round 2.
The winners of both 2nd round series advance to the doubleelimination state title tournament starting July 26 at Segra Park.
