Talking Points

Those looking for a good place to retire won’t need to move far.

Columbia is one of Wallethub’s best places to retire.

The personal finance website ranked 182 US cities on affordability, activities, quality of life and health care for retirees.

West Columbia Mayor Bobby Horton attributes Lexington County’s many attractions to Columbia’s appeal to retirees.

Those include being located 2 hours from the mountains and beaches, first class medical facilities, Lake Murray water activities and fishing, affordable golf courses, affordable housing, multiple recreation and cultural sources and access to 3 rivers.

Lexington Mayor Steve MacDougall says people move here to be closer to children and grandchildren.

“We are fortunate in the Town of Lexington to have such a diverse selection of neighborhoods and home-sites that fit the needs of our ever-changing population,” Mayor MacDougall told the Chronicle.

Columbia placed 29th overall.

It was found 20th for affordability.

Charleston was ranked 4th best overall.

The top spots went to Orlando, FL, Tampa, FL, and Scottsdale, AZ.

The least retiree-friendly places were Warwick, RI, Bridgeport, CT, and Stockton, CA.
