Dam swim honors boy killed on Lake Murray

225 swimmers took on Lake Murray in Memory of Drew Smith Saturday.

The 10-year-old was killed by an intoxicated boat driver while fishing with his father, Randall Smith in 1997.

The Dam Swim for Drew is held each year to promote boating and swimming safety in his memory.

The event was started when Lexington High School swim team captain Bradley Cain asked Coach Anna Daly about swimming from Irmo to Lexington as a team building experience in Drew’s memory.

With the permission of Drew’s parents Karen and Randall Smith, The Dam Swim for Drew 2-mile open water swim began.

Swimmers ages 11-72 travelled from Washington D.C., North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, and all parts of South Carolina to participate this year.

The Smiths offer a scholarship each year to a Lexington High School senior.

The event also raises money for an indoor pool in the Lexington community.

The fastest swimmer this year was Coleman Campbell, 17, of Lexington with a time of 42 minutes and 31 seconds.

The 2020 Dam Swim for Drew is scheduled for Sept. 12, 2020. Additional information is available at https://sites.google.com/site/lhsdamswimfordrew/ .
