Dealing with harsh reality

Why do most of us watch sports? I submit it is not at all because we are fans but because we want to escape all the noise, be it political, covid-19 or racial unrest.

We want peace and quiet. Many of us are sick and tired of multi-millionaire athletes standing on their soap box to preach to us.

Most of us regular people are not interested in their fantasy world. We are trying to make sense of the crazy world around us.

Escape from reality may become the latest new psychological addiction. Dreaming about the good ol’ days is a form of escape. Remembering simpler times with solutions we can understand makes logical sense.

The problem comes when we escape reality but are unable to find our way back. Games are a way to escape reality. I think we seek heroes in competitive sports.

Because we escape the pain of reality today does not mean we will evade it tomorrow. We seek a tiny space to shelter us from the reality of a terrifying world. We are worn down by the noise.

Many of us have our own escape mechanisms, be it music or computer games. Anything to keep out eyes on something beside the constant preaching, harassment or cancel-culture.

This “if you are not with me you are against me” thinking is what cancel-culture is about.

Reality is a self-imposed prison. Free people want a way to remain free, not imprisoned by the cancel-culture.

Some people escape to drugs because they want to escape their fears.

If we chose to create rather than escape, we can find better solutions.

Reading is a great escape. That’s why columns like this have run for over 4 decades in 1,500 publications in 41 countries.

Some folks find escape in religion, in believing in something bigger than we are.

Bottom line, either deal with reality or reality will deal with you.
