The spring sports season continues to roll along as teams around Lexington County hit the field for another week.
With baseball, soccer, softball, lacrosse and other games being played, there are many local stars worthy of the title Athlete of the Week. After the votes were tallied, this week’s winners represent Lexington and River Bluff and both excelled on the lacrosse field.
Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.
River Bluff’s Kyle Jenkins had a big outing against Academic Magnet to lead River Bluff to its only win last season.
Jenkins scored four goals and added four assists as the Gators defeated Academic Magnet 18-2. It was a season-high in both goals and assists for Jenkins. It was his third game this year with multiple goals.
The junior will look to continue his production and help River Bluff win more games. The Gators began this week 4-4 but 2-0 in region games.
Lexington’s Lilly Sundell has been on a scoring tear in the early portion of this season.
Sundell scored six goals in the team's 21-6 win over Clover last week. It was her second six-goal outing this season after scoring six against Dutch Fork. She scored a season-high seven goals against Aiken earlier this year.
While she has been scoring with consistency, Sundell has also been getting her teammates involved, dishing out assists. She had three in the game against Clover for her fourth game with at least three assists this season.
Sundell has been a key part of Lexington’s early success. The Wildcats began this week 6-1 and are outscoring teams by an average of 13 goals.
