The spring sports season is off to a fast start as fields around Lexington County fill up with exciting action.
With so many different sports going on at once, there are a plethora of players contending for Athlete of the Week. Whether they’re running on the track, rounding the bases on the diamond or sniping shots on the field, standout performances are already piling up.
This week’s winners come from Dutch Fork and Lexington. Each turned in a standout performance, leading their teams in scoring on the soccer and lacrosse fields in key victories.
Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.
Dutch Fork soccer senior Ethan Bettes helped the Silver Foxes earn their first win of the season in a 3-2 win over the Westminster Schools of Augusta.
Bettes scored two of the team’s goals and assisted on the third to earn five points in one game. It was his best performance in Dutch Fork’s first three contests this season.
So far, Bettes has scored four goals, finding the back of the net once in each of the Silver Foxes other games against Clover and Riverside. He is on pace to shatter his previous season-high goal total of seven in 24 games during his sophomore campaign.
Dutch Fork returns to the field this week with a game against Byrnes. Next week, the team begins region play. The Silver Foxes will look for Bettes to continue his scoring to help the team secure its second win.
Lexington lacrosse star Lily Sundell is trying to help the Wildcats go back-to-back.
The midfielder is on a scoring tear to start the year. Through the first five games, she scored 26 goals and added another 10 assists.
Last week, she had 10 goals and four assists in two games. Against White Knoll, she scored three goals and had two assists as the Wildcats won 22-1. In the next outing against Dutch Fork, she set a season-high with seven goals and had another two assists.
Sundell and the Wildcats will have their biggest test of the season this Thursday against River Bluff.
