Ex-Swansea coach to meet with school board

Posted

Nearly two weeks have passed since Gregory Wright was dismissed as Swansea High School head football coach.

His attorney, J. Lewis Cromer, used a football analogy to describe the timetable for Lexington District 4 to reinstate his client. “The referees are there,” he said. “The ball’s on the tee. The kickoff is about to begin.

“The school district has to decide whether they want to play offense or defense. And they have another decision that they can make better than that. They can call off the game and that would help both sides and be in everyone’s best interest.”

What happens after Thursday’s board meeting in Swansea could determine if that action is taken. Cromer said Tuesday Wright and school board members will meet to discuss his grievances. The meeting will take place during executive session. In addition, neither parties’ legal representatives, Cromer for Wright and White and Story, LLC for the school board, will be outside the closed doors during the meeting.

Cromer has already presented a copy of the lawsuit to the school board.

He plans to sue for damages based on defamation of character and interference with contractual relations.

A primary goal of filing the lawsuit, should Thursday’s meeting prove unsuccessful, is reinstating Wright as both head football coach and athletics director, a position he was demoted from prior to the end of the school year.

Cromer also wants any negative information which led to Wright’s dismissal as head coach removed from his file.

Wright was reportedly dismissed from his football duties following an incident regarding player safety at a June 25 practice. Cromer defended Wright from these accusations, citing his support from players and the community.

He is still employed by the district as a physical education teacher at Sandhills Middle School. The contract runs through June 2019.
