Forecast for the return of golf

Pro golf resumes this week, hallelujah.

One of the more popular topics is what will the restart look like.

Here is my forecast.

Because golf is extraordinary compared to other sports, the “social distancing” restrictions have not applied.

My first prediction is there is going to be a lot of great golf to watch.

Unlike many other sports, pro golfers have been able to maintain training and preparation schedules.

They even have access to “spirited informal competitions”, so simulation practice is possible.

The pro golfers are finely tuned and ready to compete.

Next, the players with less experience will have the best chance ever to shine against the veterans. Nobody has competed anywhere for months.

The world’s best players will not have the advantage of pre-determining or targeting their peak performance. Usually, the great players hit their high gear in week 2 and 3 on the heels of a predetermined break.

In my 40 years of study on golf’s peak performance, the 1 common denominator I have observed is performance success is planned. Achievement is intentional.

When the great players can completely control their schedules, their chances of controlling how they play will increase.

The corona virus took away a huge competitive advantage, that in my opinion, could affect the world’s best.

Another prediction is the players who are accurate and enjoy shot shaping will have an advantage because the first three events in the schedule require imagination backed up with accurate ball striking.

In fact, well over half of the remaining events on the PGA Tour schedule fall into this category.

Wesley Bryan news

Another frequently asked question is “What is the state of my son Wesley’s game after being out with a shoulder injury?”

He is stronger and swinging better than ever. His game is in its best form ever so while I am thrilled he is ready, I am humbled by the interest of many.

He swings better, strikes his ball better plus hits it considerably farther. He also seems better with his wedges. This was his strength and what got him to the tour.

In local golf, the Lexington County Recreation & Aging Commision’s first ever Family Golf Program will restart July 12.

For more information, go to the website, find athletics, and in last paragraph, last sentence, click here to find “Family Junior Golf Program.”

The Irmo-Chapin Recreation Commision will hold 2 youth golf summer camps. July 20-22 and July 27-29. For more information, call (803) 345-6181 or (803) 772-3336.

Finally, the South Carolina Junior Golf Association Hootie summer series registration is underway. To register in the Columbia or Tri-County Chapters go to SCJGA.org .

The RBC Heritage will be played the 3rd week of June. It appears TV will be the only viewing option.
