Former Lexington County deputy accused of ‘double dipping’

Posted

A former Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputy is accused of “double dipping,” according to a release from the department.

25 year-old Leesville resident Gabriel William Mulkey is accused of receiving a total of $2,677.14 in falsely obtained wages from the sheriff’s department from Jan. 1, 2021 to September 14, 2022.

Mulkey is charged with misconduct and obtaining a signature under false pretenses, according to a release from the state Law Enforcement Division.

Due to Mulkey being a former employee, the department asked SLED to investigate the case, both agencies confirm.

Arrest warrants shared by SLED state that Mulkey submitted time cards with hours saying he was on official duty for the department, hours that overlapped with ones he was working at another job outside of his patrol deputy position. The false hours totaled 132.25 across 73 days.

"When I became aware of Mr. Mulkey's actions, which included showing on his time card he was on duty for the sheriff’s department when he was actually off duty and being paid by outside entities, I started the process to terminate his employment and asked SLED to review the matter," Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon is quoted in a release from the Lexington County Sheriff's department. "Deputies are held to a higher standard and honesty is a key part of that."

According to the release from the department, Mulkey was terminated on Oct. 10 of last year. On April 11, Mulkey turned himself in and was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center.
