Hollywood is coming to Gilbert this week! Gilbert-Summit Senior Center members, and members of the seven other Lexington County Senior Centers are having a gala “Hollywood Premier” party at their gymnasium August 10.

It won’t be the Oscars, but members will walk down a red carpet to attend the grand party. The ladies will wear beautiful evening dresses and many will dress as their favorite movie stars. There will be dancing and prizes will be awarded for the best costumes. Everyone will have their photograph taken. The members will be treated to lunch and many will win a door prize.

Director Maxine Caughman said the members have a busy August. In addition to their health, nutrition and personal care seminars the members are planning day trips. The crafters have been busy making Christmas and Halloween ornaments and other crafts for the craft show September

29. Some crafters are sewing bibs and walker cover aprons for seniors in assisted livings centers. Many thanks to these GSSC crafters: Stella Hendrick, Mardon Collins, Jane Goodwin, Edna Keenan, Mary Coleman and Grace Nowaczyk.

If you are age 60 or over and would like to become a member, call 892-5745.

First Baptist Church in Gilbert members are still collecting school supplies for the annual “Teachers Luncheon” August 17. They need: pencils, markers, notebook paper, glue sticks, sharpies, post-it-notes, tape, graph paper, hand sanitizer, and tissues. FBC also invites the community to the annual Homecoming August

19. They will have lunch following the morning service. For information call 892-3699.

Congratulations to Nathan Brady, a student at Gilbert High School. He placed second with students from other local high schools at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference. Brady had to complete a construction project in three days to demonstrate he could work with other students as a team.

Gilbert Middle School has a new ELA or English, Language Arts teacher. Congratulations to Jenn Hamilton, who will begin teaching this month.

The Summer Reading Program “Libraries ROCK” ended last week at our Gilbert-Summit Branch Library. Children enrolled in the program enjoyed a lively play by Porkchop Productions. The play this year was Rapunzel. Some of the children attending dressed up as little princesses and wore colorful lavender dresses. Prior to school starting, the library will have a Summer reading wrap-up ice cream party for those who were enrolled in the program.
