Google to ban old Androids

Are you using an old phone or tablet? If you’re using an ancient device, now might be the time to upgrade.

Google will no longer allow users to sign in on devices running Android 2.3.7 or older.

Android 2.3.7 Ginger bread was released in September 2011.

If you’re still using one of these devices, you’ve more than gotten your money’s worth. You’ve earned an upgrade.

Remember, outdated software can pose significant security and privacy risks.

You still have some time to update your software or buy a new phone. The change will not take effect until Sept. 27. After that, if you sign into Google, add an email or calendar account, or try to use YouTube, Maps, or Gmail apps you will get error messages.

How do you know if your device is using Android 2.3.7? Open the Settings app. Tap System > Advanced > System update.

On the update screen, you should see the “Android version” and “Security patch level.” If you have a version that is 2.3.7 or older, follow any prompts to update your software. Older devices can’t always run modern versions of Android. If you have an old version and no prompt to update it’s time to get a new device.

If you still need to use an old device after Sept. 27 all is not lost. Google said you can use the browser on old Androids instead to access your account and Gmail.

You may access your account by visiting https://myaccount.google.com on your device’s browser. You can use Gmail by visiting https://mail.google.com .

For your security, try to upgrade as soon as possible.
