With state-wide glory on the line, many of the county’s best athletes are upping their game and playing their best to lead their team to victory.
Last weekend, Lexington’s best track and field stars gathered for the state title meets. Many of the runners set new personal bests and competed for podium positioning. This week’s Athlete of the Week winners represent Gray Collegiate and impressed on the track, winning multiple gold medals for the War Eagles.
Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.
Senior Damarcus Gaither concluded his War Eagle career with two golds and a silver medal at the 4A state championship meet.
Gaither took the top spot in the 400-meter dash, finishing in 21.5 seconds. He finished 0.09 seconds ahead of second-place Amare Patterson of Beaufort. Gaither was also part of Gray’s gold medal-winning 4x100-meter relay team.
He also competed in the 400-meter run, earning a silver medal. Gaither finished 0.3 seconds behind Brookland-Cayce’s Aden Price to take second and bring his medal total up to three.
Gray’s boys finished eighth overall in the final team standings. Gaither’s performance at the meet was a huge reason Gray finished as high as they did.
Tamara Steward had a huge outing for the War Eagles, winning two golds, a silver and a bronze medal.
The Gray girls finished first overall in the final points tally, winning the 4A girls state title. Without Steward’s contributions, Gray would’ve finished a few spots back.
Steward won the girls 100-meter hurdles championship after finishing 0.35 seconds ahead of her competition. Steward also competed in the 400-meter hurdle event, winning silver.
Gray’s 4x100-meter relay team took Bronze, giving Steward three medals so far.
The senior earned her fourth medal during the field events. Steward competed in the girls long jump and won the championship after leaping 5.48 meters on her first attempt.
